Some Deadline and Grading Updates

daily

The Registrar’s Office finally sent out an email with the deadline for grading (I think they’re short staffed; we normally get this email much earlier). I have until December 19 to turn in grades. So the deadline for materials is still next Monday (December 12), but if you need more time, you can turn your typeface in by December 16 for a 10% penalty.

Related: If you need to earn more extra credit (2 points of overall course credit), you can the do rest of the glyphs as originally assigned for the typeface:

  • 0 – 9
  • double and single left/right quotes
  • period
  • comma
  • exclamation point
  • question mark
  • em dash
  • hyphen.

The numbers are worth one point and the punctuation another point. So you can do one or the other for one or both for two points.

If you can’t remember the difference between an em dash and a hyphen, check this web page.

Due Date

Everything’s due by 5 pm on Monday, 12.12.

Typography and Protest

Interesting article about an exhibition in San Francisco on typography as a tool for social movements. (If R-rated language bothers you, skip it. But I couldn’t stop laughing.)

Elam Posters

If you’re still missing some, you have until Sunday at 5pm. At this point, you’ve missed the 1/2 credit deadline but if you can complete them by the Sunday deadline, you’ll get 1/3 credit. Which might not seem like a lot, but it could make a difference. (Keep in mind that each of the posters is worth two points and, because we’ve dropped a couple of projects, there are less than 100 points for the whole class.)

Finishing Your Font

Be sure that you’ve filled in the Font Info dialogue (File > Font Info…). Type a name in—add “final” to the end of the name, then click the Build Names button.

If you want to install your font on your own computer, File > Generate Font…

When you finish your typeface, upload it to the Typeface folder you have in Google Drive. (Be sure you remembered to add “final” in the Font Info window—this is how I’ll know which font to grade.

Typeface

Work session. I’ll be moving around the room to provide feedback—be sure to take notes and make this your final Sketchbook entry. You can turn your sketchbook at the end of class (take a phone pick of the notes you just took) or drop it off with Lorraine in the CM&D office by the due date (12.12, 5 pm).

Sketch 12: /Type/ in Caslon

The original version of the typeface was designed by William Caslon in the late 18th century. Caslon had a higher degree of contrast than other fonts of the time, which helps improve readability by making each glyph have a stronger individual identity. This version was designed by Carol Twombly, who designed several other influential typefaces including Trajan and Lithos.

Sketchbooks

I’ll be collecting them in class today and Thursday. If you forget to bring yours, you can drop it off with Lorraine in the CM&D office (due by 12.12 at the latest).

Typeface

Work session. Either today or Thursday, you’re required to show me your work so far for feedback. Take notes in your notebook. Label your notes as entry 13 in the sketchbook.

Typeface: Updating Requirements

daily

Given the progress most people have made so far, I’m scaling the project back a little. You can drop the numbers and punctuation; you just have to do the lowercase and uppercase alphabet.

Also, as I said in class, don’t get obsessed about tweaking a subset of glyphs at the expense of getting all of the alphabet completed. If you can get all of the uppercase and lowercase complete by then, you’re grade might not be awesome (although maybe it will be) but you’ll at least pass the project.

So far, we’ve completed

  • Axial
  • Radial
  • Dilitational
  • Random
  • Grid

If you didn’t finish those, you can get half credit if they’re finished by 3:00 on Tuesday after break. You have to email me to let me know that you have ungraded assignments.

Also, you can earn extra credit (2%) if you pick one of the draft posters you created and develop a final version (with images, color, etc.). You need to do one version and get feedback from me, then do a second version. If you half-ass it you won’t get the extra credit.

Typeface

Continue working on your typeface. As I said before, I’m not setting specific deadlines except for the final version (5 pm, 12/12). But in order to stay on track, you should try to have the lowercase glyphs completed (decent versions—not absolutely final, but not really rough drafts) by Tuesday after break.

Class Tuesday

Yes, there’s class next Tuesday. If you still have fewer than three absences, you have a little leeway but if you’ve past that, the absence is going to hurt your course grade.

Movie Titles Project

Check your submission here. Needs to have

  • the packaged Premier project (not just the .pproj file)
  • self-contained move (e.g., .mp4).

Printing Press Project

We’ll do this during class sessions for the rest of the semester. In group of three or four, Patrick will help you design, lay out, ink, and print a simple poster. This is a pass/fail assignment worth five points. You’re not graded on the design itself, but try to have some fun with the project.

We’ll start by having each team go look at the type, ink, and woodcut images that your team can use. Then your team will meet during class (or over email or whatever) to sketch out a simple design. In a later class, your team will go back to the studio and print the poster.
